Saturday (DAY 1)
9:20am – Ascend to New Heights
Length of activity: 3.25 hours | Price per person: $$
Pikes Peak is known as “America’s Mountain,” and you and your girlfriends will find out why when you ascend to the top via the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The train ride takes a little over three hours and scales the mountain for nearly nine miles. At the summit, enjoy panoramas of the city and the Rocky Mountain Front Range (the same view that inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful!”) and don’t forget to try a famous “High Altitude Donut.”
Tip: The entrance to the railway is in Manitou Springs, and depending on the time of year, parking can be tricky. Buy a parking pass for only $5 for the close access, or take the scenic route by walking from Manitou Avenue or hopping on the free shuttle in east Manitou Springs during the summer months.
2:00pm – Fooding Around
Length of activity: 3 hours | Price per person: $$
Learn the inspiring story of Colorado Springs through its local food on a walking tour of downtown with Rocky Mountain Food Tours (that’s us!). You and your girlfriends will maximize your weekend by visiting five diversely delicious restaurants in only three hours. Ticket prices include all of the food (upgrade to include alcohol pairings), so come hungry and be ready to make memories on this upbeat excursion.
Tip: Tickets do sell-out in advance, so purchase your tickets with ample time in order to accommodate your entire group. Tours accommodate up to 14 people.
7:00pm – Let’s Play
Length of activity: 2.5 hours | Price per person: $$
Get fancy and head out to see a world-class theater production at the Fine Arts Center, Theatreworks, or the Pikes Peak Center. With an ever-changing rotation of plays, musicals, and concerts, these three venues offer extraordinary entertainment in a classy environment. Both the Fine Art Center and the Pikes Peak Center are located downtown while Theatreworks is located closer to the center of town on the UCCS campus. You’ll be satisfied having just finished the food tour, but just in case there will be cash bars offering wine and snack food on hand.
Tip: If you’re heading to the Pikes Peak Center in downtown, find easy parking along Cascade Avenue, Tejon Street, or Colorado Avenue where meters stop charging after 6:00pm.
10:00pm – Downtown Funk
Length of activity: until the cows come home! | Price per person: $-$$
Hit the clubs just as downtown starts to buzz for a night of dancing and revelry with your girls. The main action happens on one block on Tejon Street between Pikes Peak Avenue and Kiowa Street. Giddy-up with some good ol’ country line dancing at Cowboys, indulge in a caramel apple martini at Blondie’s, or sit fireside on the rooftop of Gasoline Alley.
Tip: For ease and safety, we highly recommend getting an Uber or Lyft to and from you hotel.
Sunday (DAY 2)
9:00am – Take a Hike – Literally
Length of activity: 3-4 hours | Price per person: free!
Rejuvenate your spirit by taking a hike on one of the breathtaking trails surrounding Colorado Springs. No matter your athletic ability, you and your gals will find a path that reintroduces you to nature and makes you feel refreshed. Top on your list should be one of most beautiful attractions, Garden of the Gods, but you can also try Palmer Park, Cheyenne Canyon, Red Rock Canyon, or Mt. Herman for easy to moderate routes. If you’re feeling particularly spry, we recommend the famed Manitou Incline, which is a mile-long stair-step climb along the route of the original Cog Railway.
Tip: If rock climbing is your thing, Garden of the Gods and Red Rock Canyon offer some awesome routes with stunning views from the top. Make sure you read the regulations beforehand, and it might be worth looking into a guide service such as Front Range Climbing Company. Also, our best advice we can give for avoiding altitude sickness is to drink plenty of water!
1:00pm – Splish Splash
Length of activity: 3-4 hours | Price per person: $$$
Time to get pampered! After your hike, make spa appointments at the luxurious and newly renovated Garden of the Gods Club and Resort. Arguably having the most picturesque view of Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods in all of Colorado Springs, the Garden of the Gods Club is an ideal place to unwind and reflect. Book a message, body wrap, facial, vitamin therapy, manicure or pedicure. Plus, included in your spa visit is access to their steam room, indoor Jacuzzi, fitness center, and outdoor heated pool.
Tip: You might be hungry after you hike, so arrive at least 45 minutes early for your appointment and order lunch poolside (we recommend the ahi tuna salad).
6:00pm – Fall in Love
Length of activity: 1-2 hours | Price per person: $
Visit the only waterfall in Colorado that made National Geographic’s list of international wonders, Seven Falls. Soak up the landscape as you drive through the “Grandest Mile of Scenery” before stopping at the base of the falls, which cascade down the canyon in seven distinct sections. Take the 224-step trek to get closer and continue your hike through the area. The falls are lit up at night, which makes this site even more spectacular.
Tip: There is an entrance fee to see the falls; however, parking is free in the east lot at the Broadmoor Hotel.
8:00pm – One Last Hoorah
Length of activity: 2 hours | Price per person: $
After Seven Falls closes (8:00pm), head over for a nightcap at Colorado’s only five-star, five-diamond resort hotel, the Broadmoor Hotel. Walk around the lake and take a journey through Colorado Springs’ history by looking at the black-and-white photos lining the walls of the grand lobby. Sip a glass of wine at one of the several dining facilities throughout the Broadmoor’s property, or better yet, find an outdoor fire pit adjacent to the lake and reflect with your friends what a great time you had in Colorado Springs!
Tip: To end your weekend with a bang, head to the Broamdoor’s English-style pub, the Golden Bee, for yard-length beers, homemade cheesy cracker spread, and sing-along songs played on an antique upright piano.
Convincing your girlfriends to make Colorado Springs their next weekend getaway destination will be easy once they know everything this town has to offer. Now that your itinerary is planned, all you need to do is pick the weekend!
Cheers to you and your girlfriends, The Rocky Mountain Food Tours Team
