Aloha! One of my favorite parts of traveling is discovering the local food scene, and this trip was especially memorable. Before welcoming our first daughter, my husband and I escaped to Oʻahu for a relaxing babymoon filled with sunshine, ocean views, and as much incredible food as we could fit into one week.
Friends who call Oʻahu home graciously hosted us and pointed us toward some of the island's best local favorites. From fresh seafood and shave ice to bean-to-bar chocolate and a traditional Hawaiian luau, every meal told a story about Hawaii's culture, history, and incredible hospitality.
If you're planning a trip to Oʻahu—or simply dreaming of one—here are the delicious stops that made our vacation unforgettable.
Ted's Bakery: A North Shore Institution
No drive along Oʻahu's famous North Shore is complete without stopping at Ted's Bakery.
Although the bakery officially opened in 1987, the family's story stretches back much further. Ted's grandfather immigrated from Japan in 1906 to work on a Hawaiian sugar plantation before eventually purchasing land that would become part of today's Sunset Beach. What began as a humble grocery store evolved into one of Hawaii's most beloved bakeries.
By the time we arrived around 11:15 a.m., the line was already out the door—a sure sign we were in the right place.
We ordered one premium plate lunch to share featuring:
- Fresh mahi mahi
- BBQ chicken
- Garlic shrimp (our favorite!)
- White rice
- Hawaiian macaroni salad
The portions were enormous and easily fed both of us.
Of course, we couldn't leave without dessert. We chose a blueberry cream pie layered with vanilla custard and whipped cream. The flaky crust alone was worth the drive.

Roy's Waikīkī: A Special Date Night
Years before this trip, I had the opportunity to meet Chef Roy Yamaguchi during a charity dinner in Colorado Springs. I even left with a signed copy of his cookbook, so dining at one of his restaurants years later felt like coming full circle.
Since this was our babymoon, we decided to splurge a little.
We reserved an outdoor table at Roy's Waikīkī and both ordered the Roy's Classics Tasting Menu, which allowed us to sample several signature dishes.
Our meal included:
- Spicy edamame
- An appetizer trio featuring shrimp, baby back ribs, and spring rolls
- Macadamia nut-crusted mahi mahi with lobster sauce
- Honey mustard braised beef short ribs
- Roy's famous hot chocolate soufflé
- Macadamia nut tart
Everything was beautifully prepared, and enjoying dinner outside while the sun set over Waikīkī made the evening even more memorable.
Tip: Make reservations well in advance—this restaurant stays busy.
Over Easy: One of Oʻahu's Best Breakfasts
We're always searching for great breakfast spots, and Over Easy in Kailua absolutely delivered.
The bright dining room overlooks the open kitchen, creating a relaxed neighborhood atmosphere.
I ordered the incredible Brunch Bowl, which combined:
- Avocado
- Soft eggs
- House-made yogurt
- Spinach tomato jam
- Candied bacon
- Microgreens
My husband chose the fried egg sandwich with cheddar, caramelized onions, spicy aioli, and crispy potatoes.
Both dishes were fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we wanted before spending the day exploring the island.
Matsumoto Shave Ice: Hawaii's Most Famous Frozen Treat
A visit to Haleʻiwa isn't complete without standing in line at Matsumoto Shave Ice, which has been serving customers since 1951.
Unlike a traditional snow cone, authentic Hawaiian shave ice is made by shaving a solid block of ice into incredibly fine, fluffy flakes before adding flavored syrups.
With nearly 40 flavors to choose from, narrowing down our choices wasn't easy.
I ordered the signature combination of:
- Lemon
- Pineapple
- Coconut
My husband selected:
- Lychee
- Mango
- Guava
The result was colorful, refreshing, and perfect after a warm afternoon exploring the North Shore.
Pro tip: Eat it quickly before it melts into a cup of syrup!
Manoa Chocolate: Bean-to-Bar Perfection
One of our favorite hidden gems was Manoa Chocolate.
Founded in 2010, this bean-to-bar chocolate company focuses on Hawaiian-grown cacao and small-batch production. We toured the factory, sampled several chocolates, and even tasted chocolate tea.
Some of my favorite bars included:
- Breakfast Bar with roasted cacao nibs
- Hawaiian Sea Salt
- Hawaiian Honey (made with local honey)
As someone who can never resist quality dark chocolate, this stop quickly became one of the highlights of our trip.
I even brought several bars home...although saving the last one has proven nearly impossible.

Dole Plantation: Home of the Original Dole Whip
Did you know it takes about 20 months for a pineapple plant to produce its first fruit?
We learned plenty of pineapple trivia during our visit to Dole Plantation, but let's be honest—the real reason we stopped was for the famous Dole Whip.
Creamy, refreshing, and perfectly tropical, it was exactly what we wanted on a warm Hawaiian afternoon.
Beyond the soft serve, families can also enjoy:
- The world's largest pineapple maze
- Garden tours
- The Pineapple Express train
- A large gift shop

Traditional Luau: An Evening of Hawaiian Culture
No first trip to Hawaii feels complete without attending a traditional luau.
Before dinner, guests could participate in cultural activities like:
- Learning to weave palm leaves
- Spear throwing demonstrations
- Traditional Hawaiian games
We also sampled classic Hawaiian dishes including:
- Poi
- Lomi lomi salmon
- Kalua pork
- Sweet potatoes
- Guava BBQ chicken
- Taro rolls
- Pineapple cake
After dinner, the evening transformed into an energetic celebration featuring Polynesian dancing, music, storytelling, and thrilling fire knife performances beneath the stars.
It was the perfect way to end our Hawaiian adventure.

Whether you're grabbing garlic shrimp from a roadside bakery, indulging in a world-famous chocolate soufflé, or sipping fresh coconut flavors over shave ice, every meal becomes part of the island experience.
Our babymoon gave us wonderful memories before becoming parents—and many of those memories revolve around amazing meals shared together.
